The main reasons I hate, yes hate, this blu-ray player.

1) The remote is terrible. The buttons don't work unless you mash down on them with a lot of force, and even then sometimes they don't work. Get a universal remote, you say? There are NO UNIVERSAL REMOTES THAT WORK WITH THIS despite what the salesmen may tell you.

2) Does not work with WEP but does not state this in the manual. I had to do a ton of research online to even come close to figuring out how to connect it to the internet. Then, once I connected it, I had many continuous issues with the connection which may or may not be a result of poor design of this product but I did not have any issues with my other connected devices... Hmmmm...

3) The Netflix feature is awful. If your connection goes down, you have to reload the movie, start from the beginning and mash down on the fast forward button for about 30 min if you were near the end of the movie. Give me a break! The remote you are forced to use is terrible for Netflix users.

4) The menus are not well organized and overall the player is just NOT user friendly.

I'm never buying Insignia again because of my experience with just this one product of theirs. TERRIBLE DESIGN!!! What were they thinking? (I kept asking myself this out loud over and over as I was trying to set it up. LOL)

After fooling with a Samsung BD-P1600 for literally a week trying to get the wi-fi to work, I took it back and got this Insignia for a little less. And within 2 minutes of getting it out of the box I had it hooked up to my TV via HDMI and my internet via wi-fi and was streaming a movie from Netflix. The Netfix is my favorite part about the player. It works well with my 3 MB/sec DSL connection. The movie takes about 30-45 seconds to buffer and start playing, then it works flawlessly the whole movie. Netflix has a lot of children's movies/shows for my 3 yr old, and the movie selection is not bad and growing every day

Standard DVD playing is fine with great picture quality. I haven't played a blu-ray in it yet, but if it's any better than the DVD quality, it is excellent. I have had it for a couple of weeks and all is good. I would recommend this player over a more expensive Samsung (kind of ironic that Insignia is made by Samsung).

As a Blu Ray player, you could do worse. As a way to watch Netflix, I can't stress enough how horrible a product it is. I've been so close to throwing the thing out of a window *several* times. Extremely frustrating as it doesn't connect to the internet 5 out of 6 times I turn the unit on, and when it does get a connection, it's so flaky that if you fast forward or rewind you lose it and need to reboot, if you finish one show or movie or whatever you can't watch another without rebooting.. When you lose the connection it recommends you to visit [...], which is literally an advertisement prompting you to buy one of these pieces of garbage, or sign up for netflix. It's such an insult. I called their customer service just once; I waited fifteen minutes for some guy who was eating the whole time I explained my issue to hang up on me when I finished my diatribe. I will NEVER buy another insignia product and I wouldn't suggest it to my worst enemy. I've received several over the air software updates and they've done NOTHING to repair these issues or enhance the experience. As I said, as Blu Ray player, it gets the job done. DO NOT buy this thing for Netflix - it's pathetic.

Contrary to what others have said, this is not nearly as good as an oppo. I have had many compatibility problems with different disks and formats. I dont know what program others are using to get thier avi files, but right in the manual it states that it does not play divx, does play xvid. I have no idea why it is like that, but it is hit or miss on any format it plays. Many will play but have artifacting, very severe on mp4 files, just some dots on avi's. These are all files that play fine on the computer. It refuses to play video on many disks, just plays audio, just had that happen on a divx file, thats how i know it doesnt play divx, although im pretty sure i have played some divx files, but those may have been the ones that were artifacting. I have installed the latest firmware just in case someone is wondering. Upconversion is good, although i doubt it is the best.

Brilliant! My top-of-the-line ([...] special) sony blu-ray player doesn't even play Mp3 - yet alone Divx, Xvid, h.264, MKV, Mpeg-4 etc... What a disappointment that electronics manufacturers seem to be decreasing the availability of file formats on their players.
JVC to the rescue! A quick search at videohelp(dot)com shows that this player and this player alone is (user verified as) capable of playing all the formats they list, including WMA and JPG, as well as from USB and all the recordable formats such as blu-ray dual layer discs(currently $25 each for a 50GB blank disk - ouch).
For some reason this awesome compatibility isn't touted in the product description but I think it should be. I don't even own the product but it took me an hour to find what I was looking for so here you go.

It works great and covers all the media I currently use, and has more
media sources if I get into making some videos myself.

I purchased this blu ray player is August! Now the player says disc error and no disc on 3 brand new out of the shrink wrap blu ray discs. This player has also stopped playing regular dvds.

The remote if you can call it that would sometimes pop up the blu ray menus and sometimes not. The remote never repeated chapters or the titles. Instead you get a lovely red circle with a slash through it.

I paid full price for this player. I like(d) JVC products my 37 inch tv is a JVC. After 2 regular dvd players, which each lasted barely one year, and now a blu ray player that quits after 5 months! I'm through with JVC dvd/blu ray players.

JVC customer service tried to first talk me into firm ware up grades and then finally said that this won't work (no kidding?) and then I was told to 'initialize' the set. This didn't work either. Finally I was given the company line that "JVC parts are under warranty for one year."

I will never buy another JVC. Longevity - Zero.
